Data Centre MEP & Fit-Out

Data centre MEP fit-out — the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing installation that converts a powered shell into operational infrastructure — is the workstream where specification failures are most consequential and most costly to remedy after the fact. Cooling systems installed without the liquid cooling capability the rack density requires. Power distribution designed to a standard that cannot support the contracted redundancy tier. NCP certification not confirmed before an installation schedule is committed. Armason manages the MEP fit-out process for operators specifying new or upgraded facilities — appointing partners with genuine capability in the required cooling type, managing certification as a hard gate rather than an afterthought, and coordinating installation, commissioning, and RFS.

What Data Centre MEP Fit-Out Involves

MEP fit-out in a data centre environment encompasses three interconnected technical domains. The electrical domain covers the primary power distribution from the grid connection or UPS input through to the power distribution units at rack level — including transformer, switchgear, UPS systems, generator sets, and static transfer switches. The mechanical domain covers cooling — from primary cooling plant through to the in-row, rear-door, or direct liquid cooling systems at rack level. The plumbing domain covers the cooling water and glycol circuits that serve liquid cooling systems and the fire suppression systems that protect the IT load.

Each domain has its own specialist installation contractors, and the interface between them is where coordination failures typically occur. Power distribution routing and mechanical routing must be coordinated to avoid conflicts that require costly remediation during installation. The cooling water circuits must be pressure-tested and commissioned before any IT equipment is brought into the space. And the power system must be tested to its specified redundancy level before any offtaker is told their capacity is available.

NCP certification — NVIDIA Cloud Partner site approval — is a mandatory gate for any operator intending to host GPU infrastructure. An operator that claims GPU readiness without NCP certification is representing a capability it cannot deliver. Armason verifies NCP certification status as a hard gate in the fit-out process, not a preference — an installation schedule committed before certification is confirmed creates programme risk that is difficult and expensive to manage when the certification process raises questions about the facility specification.

At a Glance

NCP

NVIDIA Cloud Partner certification is a mandatory gate before any GPU installation schedule is committed

Liquid

Direct liquid cooling is a minimum technical requirement for AI & HPC rack densities not a preference

Three

Electrical, mechanical, and plumbing domains coordinated as a single fit-out programme — interface management is the critical workstream

RFS

Ready for service confirmation against a defined test schedule — not a self-certification by the installation contractor

Data Centre Managed Services

The MEP fit-out process — stage by stage.

01

Technical Spec Handoff

Finalised technical specification received — rack count, kW per rack, GPU or server model, cooling type, networking fabric, redundancy tier. No open questions before the fit-out programme begins.

02

Fit-Out Partner Selection

Fit-out partner matched to the required cooling type. Liquid cooling is a hard qualification gate — partners claiming liquid cooling capability are assessed on track record in live environments, not on claimed capability alone.

03

NCP Certification

NVIDIA NCP site approval confirmed before any installation schedule is committed. Equivalent OEM certification confirmed for non-Nvidia GPU deployments. This gate is not bypassed regardless of programme pressure.

04

Installation

Electrical, mechanical, and plumbing installation coordinated as a single programme. Interface between power distribution and mechanical routing managed actively. Cooling circuit pressure testing completed before IT equipment enters the space.

05

Commissioning & RFS

Full system commissioning against the design specification. Redundancy tested to the contracted tier. RFS certificate issued against a defined test schedule, not self-certified by the installation contractor.

How Armason Manages MEP Fit-Out

Armason’s fit-out management model applies the same neutral partner selection principle that governs all managed services workstreams. We have no preferred fit-out contractor, MEP engineer, or commissioning manager that we appoint regardless of capability. Every appointment is made on the basis of demonstrated track record in the specific cooling type and power distribution configuration required for the programme — not on the basis of an existing commercial relationship.

NCP certification is managed as a programme gate, not a parallel administrative process. We engage with the certification process at the earliest possible stage in the fit-out programme and make the certification timeline explicit in the overall programme schedule. This prevents the scenario where an installation programme is planned and contracted against a certification assumption that turns out to be wrong — a scenario that is both expensive and damaging to operator-offtaker relationships.

MEP fit-out connects directly to the adjacent workstreams — development and construction management provides the shell that fit-out works within, and GPU deployment follows fit-out commissioning. Armason maintains programme continuity across all three workstreams.

Cooling Specification by Workload

Standard enterprise racks (2–10kW) — conventional air cooling with hot/cold aisle containment. Available in most existing data centre facilities. No specialist fit-out requirement beyond standard M&E.

High-density enterprise racks (10–25kW) — enhanced air cooling with rear-door heat exchangers or supplementary in-row cooling. Achievable in facilities with appropriate ceiling height and cooling plant capacity. Transition zone between air and liquid.

GPU and AI racks (25–100kW+) — direct liquid cooling required. Coolant circulated directly to the chip or GPU module. Requires dedicated cooling infrastructure — manifolds, CDUs (coolant distribution units), glycol circuits. The installation contractor must have demonstrated track record in this configuration.

Immersion cooling — GPU or server hardware submerged in dielectric fluid. Highest density achievable but significant operational differences from conventional rack environments. Specialist installation and commissioning required.
